[edit] What

A pinstriped suit made with reflective safety material.

[edit] Details

Bicycle and Running clothes often have reflective material affixed in patches or along seams. Has anyone found a way to weave this material into fabric so it does not look as geeky? In a pinstripe pattern? Would it be possible to make said fabric? And then make a suit out of it.

With the right resources it is possible. Samples we got from Dashing Tweeds prove this. We've also been able to source reflective yarn known as RetroGlo (the same that Guy Hill's uses at Dashing). We currently working with local talent to anticipate making a sample pattern as pinstripe/design a suit!

The goal is to keep production local to new york and as sustainable as possible (and always OpenSource). Metlon only accounts for one mill weaving RetroGlo into "wide fabric", Schoeller Textiles in Switzerland (US Office: Seattle, WA).

[edit] Next Steps

  1. Get the fabric woven
    1. We're sourcing our scotchlite retro-reflective thread from metlon ( http://www.metlon.com/ ) We've gotten two-sided 1/69" thread. It is not very strong.
    2. We're sending this to/through our primary fashion contacts and collaborators: ***Nikolai Rose: http://nikolairose.com/
      • Alan Paukman tel: 917-968-7510 / email: alan@nikolairose.com
      • Jacob Melinger tel: 347.623.4436 / email: jacob@nikolairose.com
    1. They've contacted several mills. We are sending the thread to two of them:
      1. Oriole Mill http://theoriolemill.com
      2. Lapin Textiles http://www.lapintextiles.com/
  1. Once fabric is made (there are some difficulties there) then we would send this fabric to one or more of several clothes makers:
    1. http://outlier.cc
    2. http://cordarounds.com
  2. Backup/Alternative: Screenprint a pinstripe pattern w/ retro-reflective ink

    2. by the gallonMSDS

[edit] Other Things to Make

  • Hat
  • Belt
  • Pants with patterns of it at the ankles
  • Shoes

[edit] Other Ways to present

  • Fashion Show
    • Have a fashion show w/ all the london crews, and portland crews
    • run it right after one of the regular eyebeam shows, so we have runway + lights
    • so we would just have to tear down.
    • invite all nyc bike shops, crews, orgs (TA, Times Up)
    • find someone who would be promoter, choreographer, sound person
