[edit] General FAQ
- What does Eyebeam do?
- From the Eyebeam Mission Statement: Eyebeam is an art and technology center that provides a fertile context and state-of-the-art tools for digital research and experimentation. It is a lively incubator of creativity and thought, where artists and technologists actively engage with culture, addressing the issues and concerns of our time. Eyebeam challenges convention, celebrates the hack, educates the next generation, encourages collaboration, freely offers its contributions to the community, and invites the public to share in a spirit of openness: open source, open content and open distribution.
- Further information about the organization, departments, events, etc, can be found on the Eyebeam website..
- When is Eyebeam open?
- Eyebeam is open to the public between the hours of 12pm-6pm on Tuesday-Saturday, except on holidays (see list below). Residents and fellows can gain access to the building outside these hours - more info on this in the Facilities FAQ below.
- I need to have a package shipped/messengered here. What's the address?
- The proper address is:
- Your Name
- c/o EYEBEAM
- 540 W. 21st Street
- New York, NY 10011
- Please remember that unless someone is at the front desk, you will have to meet the shipper at the door to receive your package (translation: Answer the damn doorbell.) If you are expecting a package early in the morning (before 10:00 am) or after 6:00 pm, it is usually a good idea to arrange to meet the delivery at the door yourself.
- How do I give someone directions to Eyebeam?
- Eyebeam is at 540 West 21st Street between 10th and 11th Avenues. It's a dark grey building on the south side of the street. It's accessible by taking the M23 bus or the C/E train to the 23rd Street stop. Another option is to take the M14 bus to its last stop at 19th btw 10th and 11th. If they're driving, tell them that the block is a one way street and only approachable from 11th Ave (essentially the West Side Highway.) Directions via Google Maps
- Where's the bathroom?
- Walk down the long hallway on the first floor. Make your first right. Womens room at the end, Mens room to the right.
[edit] Residency/Fellow FAQ
[edit] Admin Stuff
- What are the requirements of my time here at Eyebeam?
- Fellows
- During the Fellowship, the Fellow is expected to work 4 days each week at Eyebeam; 1 day is free for external consulting, teaching, projects (unrelated to work undertaken at Eyebeam) or professional development. During the Fellowship, the Fellow will work on their personal projects, collaborate with other Fellows, Residents, and Staff as agreed at monthly meetings and potentially develop new works, collaboratively. All projects must be agreed upon between the Fellows, the Senior Fellows, and the Production Coordinator. The Education Coordinator, the Programming Manager, the Director of Technology and the Executive Director must be kept informed of all projects being undertaken during the course of the Fellowship.
- Residency
- During the Residency, the Resident will develop, research or produce the project as outlined in the proposal from which the Resident was selected.
- As an artist, what meetings do I have to attend?
- Please refer to your contract
- What are the milestones for me as a resident/fellow?
- Please refer to your contract
- I'm looking for feedback on my project. How do I get it?
- Stop Work is an ideal place to get feedback from Staff and Artists. For fellows, the weekly fellows meetings are an excellent time to get small-group critique. For residents, the monthly Residents Check-In meetings are a great time for group feedback as well.
[edit] Blogs and Website
- Please contact Ben Leduc-Mills (ben@eyebeam.org) for help with setting up a blog on our website, feeding in your blog to our website, or with any other issues in making "Person Pages" or intern requests on our site.
[edit] Credits
- How do I properly credit Eyebeam in my work or at conference presentations?
- Please include the following credit line on all appropriate materials relating to the presentation or promotion of your project, "produced with the support of Eyebeam"
- Please also note that Eyebeam is just Eyebeam or, Eyebeam Art and Technology Center, please DO NOT deviate.
- If I do any outside work while in residency (or a fellow) at Eyebeam, do I need to credit Eyebeam?
- If the work isn't developed using Eyebeam equipement, resources or time you don't need to credit the organization, however we encourage you to use our name as often as possible. The more recognizable Eyebeam's name becomes the easier it is for us to receive future funding and support more artists' projects.
- How can I get a copy of Eyebeam's logo to include on my website?
You can download here:
- Does anyone at Eyebeam care to know if I've had a recent press mention/am asked for an interview/am speaking at a panel, etc.?
- Yes! We do our best to track Eyebeam press/blog mentions, but with the number of projects and residencies taking place at any given time, it becomes a time-consuming activity. We ask all residents and fellows to monitor their own publicity, and to keep the communications staff abreast of anticipated press/requests for interviews and participation in events outside of Eyebeam. These materials are used for reports to the board, annual reports, and requests for funding. Once again, your cooperation helps us help you.

[edit] Events FAQ
- Who is in charge of programming and running public events at Eyebeam?
- Public programs and events are managed by Paul Amitai, Programming Manager.
- What are these "private rentals" I keep on hearing about?
- When the space is not being used for Eyebeam-related programming, it is often rented out on a short-term basis (two days to one week) for corporate events (fashion week, strategy meetings, etc.). During these times, Eyebeam remains open for Eyebeam staff, fellows and resident artists to continue working, but is not open to the general public. Private rentals are managed by a local event producer named Joseph Cady.
- If the building is supposed to be "closed" for a private event, how do I get access to the lab?
- While the building is not open to the general public, it is still accessible to staff, fellows, and residents. If the front door is locked, you can still enter using your key card. Private event rentals are limited to public spaces (Main Space, Prototyping, Commons, and sometimes the conference room) and do not affect staff or artist immediate work space. However, depending on the event setup, it might be louder, busier, or less convenient in terms of accessibility to all areas of the building.
- Are staff and artists allowed to crash private events?
- Nope. If the space is being used for a private rental managed by Joseph Cady (i.e. Fashion Week), Eyebeamers are not permitted to crash the party. However, if an event is being co-hosted, co-sponsored or produced by Eyebeam, all are welcome to attend.
- What events can staff and artists attend?
- All Eyebeamers are welcome to attend public events that are produced, co-produced, co-sponsored, and/or hosted by Eyebeam. These would include exhibition openings, panel presentations, workshops, receptions, screenings, performances, etc. Some events have limited seating (workshops, in particular), might require a reservation, or in very rare instances might have an admission charge. If you are interested in participating in a workshop, please contact Paul Amitai.
